This piece is made from pictures of myself that i have collaged on to a piece of paper. I then used acrylic paint to extend lines and patterns. I cut out pieces of the picture to create line and form. I feel that this piece has a theme of nature and soft colors. I wanted to emphasize the lines and different forms within my piece.
I looked up many artists throughout this project to inspire me. Michal Macku's is one of the artists that inspired me most. His photography represents the human form using different models then often tearing the photographs apart after developed. I do enjoy photography and hope to learn more about the process. I also enjoy learning about very talented artists who utilize photography to create meaningful art.

Artists do observational drawings to capture moments in time, as well as to improve their drawing skills. I have researched different artists that utilize observational drawings, as well as people I have found inspirational. The purpose of observational drawing is to see objects as they are and be able to draw them without using memory to guide the artists, this improves drawing and observational skills. This observational drawing is done by Juliana Kunstler. She often does observational drawings to improve her art and perception with everyday objects. As Kunstler says in her blog, "the relationship of one object to another and the relationship of those objects in space," in her opinion, this is what observational drawing as all about, The relationship between different objects. In this drawing, Kunstler is using a source of light and and a still life to determine how her picture will look. Botanical artist, Dianne Sutherland, also draws from observation. She enjoys drawing nature and is inspired by artists such as Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Dianne Sutherland completed a course at The Society Of The Botanical artists and thus led to her passion of observing and drawing nature, specifically flowers and plants. This artists is inspiring to me because I also enjoy drawing nature. Claude Monet is another artist who used observation in his work. He was born on november 14, 1840 in Paris, France. Monet is considered to be the founder of the impressionist movement. He influenced many other artists such as impressionist artist, Van Gogh. Monet often observed different times of day and night and painted them all into one picture, using the impressionist style and observation, he created amazing and beautiful paintings.
These pieces are made by Yoonmi Nam, an artist that uses nature as a metaphor for current situations. Yoonmi states that “I have used images of manmade environments and cut flower arrangements as metaphors to evoke a sense of time that is both fleeting and eternal.” These pieces speak to me because I am able to link the images with things that I find beautiful, such as nature, and connect them with everyday life. Out of every piece in the gallery at Meredith College, I was most drawn to Yoonmi Nam’s series.
While exploring the gallery, I was asked if I wanted to take a tour of the art portion of the school. While touring the studios I noticed that all of the students had amazing talent. I was very inspired by their pieces. And while I wasn’t able to meet the students, I was instantly connected to them just by viewing their pieces. I also had the opportunity to view the school’s dark room, which is the largest in the state. The dark room was very impressive and while I have never been able to personally experience the process of using the room, I was very intrigued. Throughout the tour, I got to see many amazing projects that the students were working on, to say the least, I was very impressed. At the end of the tour, we explored a bit more of the campus and then took some time to sketch some of the beautiful parts of the grounds. Overall, this experience has been very eye opening and inspiring. I do hope to attend such a beautiful and creative school. The theme for my project is mental disorders. I wanted to depict the struggles that I go through daily. The separate pieces all depict a disorder starting with depression, then anxiety, and finally addiction. These pieces all come together to make a final series. My ideas have mainly developed through my experiences but also by looking at other artist’s work who have done similar pieces to mine. These artists include: Andrea Castro, whose paints and various layers inspired my pieces, and Daisy Patton, whose soft colors and faces inspire the softer tones in my piece.
Most of the artists that I chose to use as references use photo transfer and multiple layer of color to create dimension and to emphasis the piece more. My skills have developed throughout this project by learning more about photo transfer, as well as being able to build up different layers and create a conversation with the viewer. I learned varies ways to manipulate the piece to create the effect I want it to have, such as scratching into wet paint to give the effect of an overwhelming sense in my anxiety piece. In addition, I learned how to apply the paint in a way that will continue the flow of the rest of the piece, such as in my depression piece I made the paint look cloudy and faded out to show how depression makes me feel. I think my overall project is done well and starts a conversation with the viewer about different mental disorders. I think I did well with applying the photo transfers in an aesthetically pleasing way. I could improve on making the paints give the same effect as the photo transfers. Formal elements were used in all of my pieces including line, tone, color, and shape. I used line to create either a very jagged line or a soft faded line. In my anxiety piece I used a sharp line to show the jaggedness of the disorder. I used tone to create the effect and the mood that I wanted to show through my piece. Color was used when representing the disorder and the color that I often associate with that illness. Lastly, shape was used to create either a sharp effect or a softer effect. I used photo transfer, paint, and water color to create my pieces. I used water color as my first layer then went on to add photo transfer, and finally I applied paint, these materials did work successfully. The overall meaning I wanted to convey throughout this project was mental disorders and I how I view the few that I struggle with. I find that through applying the correct colors and line I am able to convey the message that I wish to achieve. I feel that I was successful in conveying this message. I am happy with my final piece and feel that it is successful. |
