This is the final completed piece for art 4. I used watercolor as the first layer, this created a soft but colorful layer as the canvas is made out of cloth. I then took watercolor pencils to outline the female figure. I used warmer colors on the bottom half and cooler colors on the top to add color and definition. I then sketched out where I wanted the vines. leafs and flowers to go and sewed different shades of green in the fabric to show where the light was hitting the vines versus where the shadows were. Lastly, I used felt to fill in the flowers, as this was a new medium I had never used, i enjoyed learning how to felt.
Overall, I feel that this piece is a self portrait as I enjoy nature and often represent that through my art. I also feel that the piece as a whole represents femininity. I enjoyed working on this piece, and I learned new techniques such as felting and sewing. I plan to continue developing in depth art to continue growing as an artist.

This is the progress I have made on my embroidery piece. I added more embroidery to outline the
vines. Some of the vines wrap around the figure to give the piece more dimension, it also add line and rhythm to the overall composition. I have also added more felt to the flowers and some of the leaves to add different texture. I like how the overall piece is looking and I enjoy the color values and the rhythm of the lines. I plan to continue embroidering the vines and leafs and felt more flowers. I added embroidery to the piece to give it more layers and dimension. I sketched out some flowers and leaves then outlined them with a dark green thread. I then added green felting to one side of the leaf to add more texture. On one of the leafs I transitioned the thread from a dark green to a light green to show where the light is hitting it, giving it dimension. I also filled in some leaves with light green, as I plan to do with the rest of the leaves. I will continue to add more embroidery and felting throughout this piece.
This project represents the female figure and how many women feel the need to blend in or hide themselves within society. I want to show femininity through this project. I also want to show what it is truly like being a women in today's society, with the constant fear of being seen as weak and unimportant, as most women are still seen today.
The canvas itself is fabric, so the first layer, watercolor, spreads and blends more than it would a typical canvas. I plan to add many more layers using mediums such as acrylic paint, embroidery, and pastels. This is an observational drawing of a pair of vintage glasses. The glasses have nice designs on the frames and I wanted to accentuate that. I also added dimension by drawing the shadows and using different pencil weights. I've learned that the best way to draw realistically is by observation, looking at the physical object instead of drawing what I think it looks like. By doing this, I am giving the viewer a more realistic picture of the object.
These are female body figures sketched from observation. They show womens figures from the back. I chose these figures to practice sketching because my next project will be representing the female figure. I think that this is a very interesting perspective as I have never sketched from this perspective before. I will continue to draw from observation and increase my observational skills.
I worked on this project with some classmates, we were assigned the theme of local flavor. The project was supposed to be to design a Vans shoe with North Carolina Themes. Since the nc state fair comes to town every fall, we chose to make one shoe with roller coasters, made with shoelaces, to create a 3 dimensional roller coaster coming off of the shoe. We then added color to show the transition between morning, evening, and night. The state fair does fireworks each night as we drew them on the shoe on the darker area.
The second shoe represents North Carolina beaches. The sand is 3 dimensional with texture and the color of realistic sand. The lighthouses are cut out of paper and also come off of the shoe. The waves are curled in a realistic way and are also have texture. North Carolina is also known for Black Beards legend, so we made a pirate boat from paper to represent Black Beards pirate ship. This piece is made from pictures of myself that i have collaged on to a piece of paper. I then used acrylic paint to extend lines and patterns. I cut out pieces of the picture to create line and form. I feel that this piece has a theme of nature and soft colors. I wanted to emphasize the lines and different forms within my piece.
I looked up many artists throughout this project to inspire me. Michal Macku's is one of the artists that inspired me most. His photography represents the human form using different models then often tearing the photographs apart after developed. I do enjoy photography and hope to learn more about the process. I also enjoy learning about very talented artists who utilize photography to create meaningful art. Artists do observational drawings to capture moments in time, as well as to improve their drawing skills. I have researched different artists that utilize observational drawings, as well as people I have found inspirational. The purpose of observational drawing is to see objects as they are and be able to draw them without using memory to guide the artists, this improves drawing and observational skills. This observational drawing is done by Juliana Kunstler. She often does observational drawings to improve her art and perception with everyday objects. As Kunstler says in her blog, "the relationship of one object to another and the relationship of those objects in space," in her opinion, this is what observational drawing as all about, The relationship between different objects. In this drawing, Kunstler is using a source of light and and a still life to determine how her picture will look. Botanical artist, Dianne Sutherland, also draws from observation. She enjoys drawing nature and is inspired by artists such as Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Dianne Sutherland completed a course at The Society Of The Botanical artists and thus led to her passion of observing and drawing nature, specifically flowers and plants. This artists is inspiring to me because I also enjoy drawing nature. Claude Monet is another artist who used observation in his work. He was born on november 14, 1840 in Paris, France. Monet is considered to be the founder of the impressionist movement. He influenced many other artists such as impressionist artist, Van Gogh. Monet often observed different times of day and night and painted them all into one picture, using the impressionist style and observation, he created amazing and beautiful paintings.
These pieces are made by Yoonmi Nam, an artist that uses nature as a metaphor for current situations. Yoonmi states that “I have used images of manmade environments and cut flower arrangements as metaphors to evoke a sense of time that is both fleeting and eternal.” These pieces speak to me because I am able to link the images with things that I find beautiful, such as nature, and connect them with everyday life. Out of every piece in the gallery at Meredith College, I was most drawn to Yoonmi Nam’s series.
While exploring the gallery, I was asked if I wanted to take a tour of the art portion of the school. While touring the studios I noticed that all of the students had amazing talent. I was very inspired by their pieces. And while I wasn’t able to meet the students, I was instantly connected to them just by viewing their pieces. I also had the opportunity to view the school’s dark room, which is the largest in the state. The dark room was very impressive and while I have never been able to personally experience the process of using the room, I was very intrigued. Throughout the tour, I got to see many amazing projects that the students were working on, to say the least, I was very impressed. At the end of the tour, we explored a bit more of the campus and then took some time to sketch some of the beautiful parts of the grounds. Overall, this experience has been very eye opening and inspiring. I do hope to attend such a beautiful and creative school. |
