the jealous curator-Sophia Heymans, "prairie burn". when I first look at the piece I notice lots of vivid colors in the series as well as texture. I notice nature is a main theme throughout the series. I also notice that there are many details within the pictures. I see bold, vivid colors that are carried out through the series. the shapes in the pictures are soft and rounded. I also notice that most of the lines are rounded as well. The textures that i see reflect the images. Sophia Heymans says that she added acrylic paint, moss, paper mache, string, twine, prairie grass seeds, dried dill, and oil on canvas. She uses these materials to add texture and to reflect the images themselves. the overall effects of this series is very romanticized and beautiful, showing the true beauty of nature. the artists used colors in this series by exaggerating them to add to the effect of the overall piece she used shading to show shadows and depth. the colors used in this piece are vibrant and vivid. these bold colors give the piece an exaggerated effect, the shapes used are soft and rounded rather than sharp and exact, this gives the effect of exaggeration. the textures used are materials found in nature, such as the moss and prairie grass seed. I feel that this is a great way to incorporate nature in a painting with a main theme of nature. light is used in places shadow isn't. i think the artist did a really nice job using color value and not having too drastic of a change when going from light to dark or dark to light. this piece has an overall happy and lucid element this element is achieved by using vibrant colors and soft shapes that are seen in this piece.
i feel that the artists statement in this series is to show how beautiful and undisturbed nature is, even through the changing of seasons. to me, this series represents the peacefulness and tranquility of nature, also how seasons change, just like every aspect of life. even though changing situations can often cause chaos, i feel that this piece shows that change brings even more beauty than before. this can relate to my life because although change is scary it is also necessary and can bring many great experiences if one's mind is open to it.

I am currently working on putting the wood sticks on the painted area while i gather material to make the moss paste to cover the words.
I photocopied my original nature series drawings so that I could add on to them without the stress and worry of messing up the originals. I was able to add more depth and dimensions to the series by shading and blending more areas. This is a great way to move forward on a project without fear of 'messing up' the original copies.
I went to Virginia Commonwealth University. The university was hosting an art related job fair. I brought my art portfolio along with some original work. The art fair was located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. People lined the streets with their portfolios ready to talk with representatives from different schools. I was nervous but excited to view schools and colleges and talk with professionals about my work.
I got some great feedback from many colleges and I got a glimpse of what a professional portfolio conference was like. I looked at Virginia Commonwealth University and Rocky Mount school of art in Detroit. There were many more school to look at but lines were long, as many people and similar ideas of what schools to view. I talked with the representatives for about half an hour. They told me that I was very good at drawing and giving the effect of still life but that I need to work on adding depth and dimension to my work. They told me about classes that their school offered that I could attend if enrolled in the fall of my graduation. I wish I could have looked at a few more schools but I am glad that I could see my top picks. Now I have an idea of what the schools are looking for in a young artist. The schools were thrilled that I was a junior and looking at undergrad schools. Most said that I had a head start and have an advantage on the school I choose to attend. I was able to present my portfolio to the representatives and get lots of positive and helpful feedback. Overall, I feel that it was a great opportunity that I took advantage of. I was able view amazing schools with great artists that attended. I was also able to expand my horizons and view different mediums and styles of art. I am glad I got the opportunity to see these amazing schools and I hope I can attend more of these very helpful art portfolio reviews.
At the North Carolina Museum of Art I looked at many art pieces and evaluated them. one piece in particular that spoke to me is Georgia o'Keefe's Cebolla Church. i feel that this painting spoke to me because from afar i only noticed the major details, such as the green grass, blue sky, white door, tan building. When i stepped closer to the painting i noticed much more like the white door had no handle, and there were skull figures in the window. I feel that the overall message that the painting is conveying is that the figures feel trapped inside the church and therefore not being able to leave.
overall, the trip to the museum was very beneficial to me and taught me to take a closer look at art itself. I used around 4 layers of watercolor paint to create deminsions and depth within the flowers. The first layer used is a very light blue and black, this making it the base layer. I then added lighter colors and eventually started to darken the colors and add detail. The piece was a very good exercise for being free with my hand and learning to be less worried about detail. I also enjoy the colors and abstraction of the flowers. My nature series is a series I choose to do because of my love for nature. I used a simple medium, weighted pens. I wanted this series to be simple but still showing how beautiful nature is. the reference material i used was nature itself. I looked at different artists that are inspired by nature such as Claude Monet and Leonardo da Vinci, both of these artists used nature to draw and paint beautiful pieces. I also looked at impressionist artwork, such as waterlilies by Claude Monet. My skills have developed through this project because i was able to improve my observational and drawing skills. I think i have done well with making the pieces have a conversation with each other, almost like a story. I could have improved on adding more detail to the middle piece, the tree.
I have used line to create the nature. I have used color and tone to create the texture and lightness of nature. I used weighted pens and i feel that they worked very successfully. I wanted to convey the message of peacefulness and simplicity that is nature. I do feel that i was successful in conveying this. Overall, I do feel happy with my piece. i'm currently in the process of creating an abstract version of flowers using watercolor. I love the depth and contrast that the multiple layers of watercolor create.
Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyoacan Mexico, where she was raised. She later traveled to New York with her husband Diego Rivera. Frida attended Mexico's premier school, Escuela Nacional preparatoria.
In her early life, Frida was dignosed with polio. Her father recommend that she play sports to strengthen her legs. She often did sports such as swimming, bicycling, and boxing. It was very unlikely at this time for a girl to be as active as she was. Many years later, Frida was involved in a bus accident leaving her spinal column broken, along with a broken collar bone, broken ribs, and eleven fractures in her right leg. There were many other injuries and she was only 18 at the time. Frida's art work is important to art history because it shows her mental and physical suffering. Most of her work is self identifying. Through her self portraits she is very open with her emotional and physical pain and struggles. Most of her art work is done with acrylic paint. she often painted self portraits as her famous quote says "I paint self portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best." This shows that she was often alone and isolated, which influenced her work. Frida was mostly influenced by indigenous Mexican culture, with bold colors and dramatic symbolism. |
